When a camera inspection is worth it
Typical reasons
Before buying a property: the condition of the main drain cannot be seen from outside, but replacing it is a major job. A camera survey gives you certainty before you sign.
Before an extension, a conversion or a new driveway: if you know where the pipe runs and how it is doing, you will not accidentally build over it.
With repeated blockages: if the same spot keeps blocking, the cause is usually in the pipe itself rather than in how it is used.
What the camera shows
The camera makes visible what otherwise stays hidden: cracks and broken shards, displaced joints, roots, deposits, sags holding standing water and badly connected branches.
Together with the locating you get the position and the depth of the problem spot. A repair can then be aimed at that one place instead of digging up half the pipe run.
A camera survey is not a leak test
A camera survey shows the visible condition of a pipe. It answers the question of what the pipe looks like inside and where something is wrong.
A leak test is a different thing. It uses water or air pressure and proves whether the pipe is watertight. The two are often ordered together, but one does not replace the other. Tell us what you need the result for and we will sort out what fits your case.

Clearing the pipe first
If there is silt or grease in the pipe, the camera sees nothing. So we clean it first where that is needed. Both can be done in one visit.
Camera run and locating
We push the camera into the pipe from the manhole. A transmitter in the camera head lets us locate the position and depth of anything unusual from above ground.
Findings and advice
We show you the footage, explain the condition of the pipe and tell you what follows from it.
And if the camera finds damage?

Does anything have to be dug up for the inspection?
No, avoiding that is the whole point. The camera goes in through an existing opening, so a manhole, an inspection opening or a removed drain fitting.
How long does an inspection take?
That depends on the length of the pipe, the number of branches and whether it has to be cleaned first. Describe on the phone what should be inspected and we will tell you roughly what to expect.
Do I get the result in writing?
We show you the footage and explain what can be seen. What is possible beyond that in terms of documents we discuss case by case. It is best to say when you book what you need the result for, for example for a purchase or for an insurer.
Can you find where the pipe runs in the garden?
Yes. A transmitter on the camera lets us locate its position from above ground. That gives you the route and the depth of the pipe without digging.
Does the pipe have to be cleaned first?
Almost always. A camera only shows what it can see. If there is silt in the pipe or the wall is coated with grease, cracks and joints underneath stay invisible.
What happens after the findings?
You decide. Some findings simply mean looking at the pipe again in a few years. Others point to a repair. We tell you what we see and what follows from it.
